Bovine Genomics Project

The aims of the Bovine Genomics Project are to identify the genes involved in the production of bioactive milk components that are beneficial to human health, describe their variation across mammals and bovine breeds and characterize the mechanisms underlying their regulation. Research studies develop and apply innovative expression and sequencing techniques including microarray expression profiling, RNA-Seq sequencing, and single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping, to the analysis of mammary cells collected from a variety of dairy cow breeds across stages of lactation. In parallel, milk composition is analyzed, including oligosaccharide, glycoconjugate, and lipid profiling, and compositional results interpreted in terms of gene regulation. The long-term goal is to guide strategies to improve the content of beneficial bioactive ingredients in cow’s milk including diet, environmental variables, and genetic selection.
