Milk Bioactives Program
Milk Bioactives Program
Milk Bioactives ProgramMilk is the complete food for infants, thanks to millions of years of
natural selection on mammalian lactation. Through the process
bioreactor that is lactation, milk provides complete nourishment and
protection for infants’ health. This principle of a complete food
delivered as a complex mixture of molecules is used throughout the
programs and projects of the FFHI. Research projects of the Milk
Bioactives Program (MBP) include: discovering new components and
structures in human milk and their functions; clinical testing of
milk-based dietary solutions for enhancing immunity; and development of
new milk lipid-based solutions for improving skin health in premature
infants. A resource of the Milk Bioactives Program that has recently been funded and initiated is the Advanced Milk Processing Lab, headed by Dr. Daniela Barile. The Milk Processing Lab is an invaluable resource to bring the bench-top research carried out in food science to the translational stages in which all the important milk components can be safely isolated and tested.
